The best way to prevent razor burn is to open the pores before you shave. Wait until after you have done everything else in the shower/bath before you shave. This will enable the warm water to open your pores and prevent irriation. Also, make sure you are using a shaving cream or gel. Soap can dry out the pores and cause more irritation. Last, always apply lotion after you have dried your legs. This will replinish the moisture and prevent dryness and irritation after the fact.

I am not exactly sure of what causes it, but I think it is probably a lot like the guys get on their face when they shave. I have experienced it too and it can HURT. I always make sure to do the following:
1. NEVER dry shave. Always soften the little hairs with hot/really warm water by washing with soap and the hot water. Rinse off and, if possible, use one of the women's shaving gels that will farther soften the little tough hairs.
2. Use a new or a relatively new razor that is really sharp.
3. Rinse with clean, warm water or in the tub or shower really good.
4. Guys always use an aftershave which is basically alcohol and stings like the dickens for a second or two then goes away. I am not sure if women have some sort of alcohol-based aftershave but it really helps and you will get used to the sting. It sort of conditions the skin. You might call a place that does bikini-line jobs on women. They might offer some sort of advice on what you can use after you shave. I always noticed that I get the burn stuff if I do not use the aftershave. The secret is to use a really sharp/new razor and soften the whiskers with hot/warm water and use a shaving gel.
5. I would never use a greasy hand lotion on my face and I would not recommend it for your legs either. I think it will only make it worse since it would do nothing for the "sterilization" of the tender, bothered skin that the razor will cause. Matter of fact, it may even make it worse since there is nothing in a hand lotion to kill skin surface germs.

As well as using a sharp razor, make sure you are using cool to cold water to rinse the blade. This also is a big thing for guys and their facial hair.Use regular water to wash then lather your legs (the longer you soak them before you shave, the better), then use a cool water to rinse the blade often.
I suffered from razor burn for many years and although a lot of the other ideas helped - I finally went to a ladies wet/ dry electric razor and I LOVE IT!
No razor burn - easy touch-ups - and you don't have to be in the shower to get a good shave! I wouldn't recommend waxes or creams if you have sensitive skin though - BAD NEWS!

For me, it happens if I apply too much pressure to the blade as I'm shaving and/or if I don't lather up my legs good enough. I prevent it by doing the following;

1. Nice, hot shower water
2. Let my legs "soak" for a while before shaving
3. Use a body scrub on my legs prior to shaving
4. Use shaving "cream"...the gels don't work for me.
5. Do not press hard on the razor as I'm shaving
6. Wait a few minutes after I shower to apply lotion
7. Use a lotion that won't sting, like St. Ives (not the kind w/ acids in it though..)

Good luck!

Shave your legs at the end of your shower or bath to soften up the hair. Hot water opens up the pores.

Try using a shaving cream, it contains great
moisturizers, and make sure you also change the blade enough. Rinse with cold water to close the pores.

If you are having probs get a new razor... hope this all helps.

First make sure you are using a sharp razor. You may have coarse hair a may require a better razor like a triple blade... use a lotion that is moisturizing. I like skintimates myself but I have also found a good hair conditioner actually does the job and is very moisturizing. Do not use soap. Change your blade more often if necessary. I have fine hair and I get 8-10 shaves out of a blade you may only get 5. Be sure to rinse your blade as well during use. But razor burn is irritation to the skin, like rug burn for example. :-)

do no longer shave with a dull razor on account that will strengthen the probability of bumps. continually shave final because of the fact exposure to the warmth water softens the hair and makes it less complicated to eliminate. Use lotion on your legs usually (even with the undeniable fact that this is extra proper in the past you shave because of the fact in case you do it merely after it may burn). making use of shaving cream can help. yet another ingredient is that some razors have moisturizing strips and that could help--maximum very low fee packaged razors don't have that. Cortisone and aloe can help to assuage razor burn and there is likewise some thing referred to as bikini zone it quite is made for razor burn interior the bikini section yet I even have discovered it additionally works for different aspects as properly. some human beings say an electric powered razor facilitates yet i've got not surely tried that. For quite sore aspects i do no longer advise lotion for soothing it, i could advise vaseline because of the fact this is been prevalent to make my bumps disappear swifter.

Use a good shaving cream or a HEAVY lather of soap. And change your razor periodically. You should not get razor burn if you follow these simple rules cause it never happens to me.

Make sure your razor is new and quality (I use Venus and they are nice and sharp). Make sure you are using plenty of soap or shave gel/cream. After you shave, apply some PFB Vanish and moisturizer. Good luck!
