they are so far away that merely moving one mile is meaninglessly small from our vantage point. If you could photograph the moon from two points thousands of miles apart on the earth you could see a difference.

When we look at an object, it is not separately viewed but in contrast/along with the background as well as the surroundings in front of the object. When we walk a little further and look at the object, though the object is not moved from its old place but the surroundings changed a little and appear to be in a different place and then we feel that the object (moon) had moved to a new place. When we go on walking and looking at the moon, the surroundings through which we observe the moon changes and makes the moon follow us to a new place and it is felt by us.

When we think about the motion of an object we are considering its change of position relative to ourselves and how fast it is changing. Consider if you are walking down the street and pass a car parked alongside the road close to where you are. The cars relative position changes rapidly because it is not far away. Now watch the relative position of the house across the street as you walk. It appears to be moving slower because it is farther away. If you are watching an object many miles away such as a mountain or the moon they seem to be standing still because of the great distance. This sense of distant objects standing still compared to your position makes them appear to be following you.
