Great forest. Historical too. Go for it.

Definitely worth visitng but the people can be a bit strange. People from Gloucestershire (which borders the Forest) mostly call them "Deaners" and say you can't trust them and they're all inbred. I'm not sure that's true, but some of the villages can be a little insular. I'd say go for a day and take in the beautiful countryside and if you get the chance visit the Three Choirs Vinyard just outside of Newent. Excellent English wines and the views of the vinyards are amazing, in this weather you could believe you were in France!
Enjoy, just avoid any strange looking local shops that might be for "Local people"....;~)

Been there a million times as a kid on school trips (live near by) and its very pretty and has an interesting sculpture trail. Clearwell Caves is also a good day out. However it is widely thought around this area that the people who live there are inbred morons with webbed feet. I was friends with someone at college from Lydney (in the forest) and she was lovely and intelligent (though I don't recall seeing her feet!) so I don't know how true this is!

Walk up to "Devil's Pulpit" overlooking the river Wye and Tintern Abbey - it's a steep walk but well worth it for the view. Also Symonds Yat where there is a peregrine falcon viewing station and stunning views over the river. Great picnic sites, also some excellent caravan/camping sites run by the forestry commission. Pubs are pretty good as well. Have a good time.

Totally worth visiting.
Best thing to do is take a mountain bike as there are loads of good cross country trails. Or you can hire a decent mountain bike there!
People are nice and friendly as it's generally the outdoorsy/family types.
Gorgeous countryside; fresh air and all that sort of stuff. Watch out for John Craven and Bill Oddie - they get everywhere them two.

I think its spooky, especially as some of the unknown victims of Fred and Rose west are allegedly burried there but the police didnt find the bodies.
