There seems to be a controversy about this. In the montessory method they are against the child writing before 5 yrs ,I think. What is the expert opinion?

I started my childern on letters at the age of 3 1/2 and by the time they got into school they could spell their name and address. It really all depends on their attention span.

For a normal child it should be between the age of 3 to 6 years old (preschooler). At the age of 3 or 4, motor control should be pretty much stable and the child should already be able to hold a pencil and try to write. That's is why this age bracket is called preschool because it is a preparation for the school age which is in the range of 6 to 12 years old. Teaching the child to do should not be imposed but should be done by motivation and encouragement.

i think you should start teaching READING early, by reading to the child starting at 3. At 4 and 5 , a smart child can be looking at the pages of children's books. If they have favorite books, a smart child will learn that certain sounds go with certain marks on the page - reading.

But writing is different. It requires precise control of the small muscles in the fingers. that is tied to physical development, not mental development. I wouldn't even try before 5, maybe 6. There is no reason to cause the child frustration because they cannot yet do what their muscles just can't do yet.

BUT, you might be able to speed this up by introducing the child to drawing early. Finger painting first, then crayons, then pencils.

If u want your child to write its best starting with 2yrs old (think its too early) I started my schooling at the age of 3+ Hence I knew to write abcd.. and1234.. but let me tell u something don't stress on the child it also depends upon the child's ability to write some children write at a very early age and some at later (it has nothing to do with brilliancy of a child ) so just try some simple letters and numerical if the child is able to do it then its good if not let him take his time.

I've taught for over 20 years, and I have to tell you that age doesn't matter... it's maturity level. My daughter was an early starter... reading and writing fluently by age four. I remember her wanting to copy the letters she saw on Sesame Street when she was three... and she did a pretty good job. My sons were different and didn't begin reading and writing well until age five.

As with any other skill, I say follow the child's lead. If a child is showing exceptional fine motor skill coordination, then to not challenge her mind simply because you are waiting for an arbitrary age would seem to be holding her back. I wouldn't push the child, but i don't see the harm in presenting new information.

children should have experiences with writing when they can grasp a crayon or pencil or marker or chalk but formal instruction on letter formation does not need to start until the child shows readiness such as copying forms. what age? at the age of 2 or 3 or 4 a child can be shown how to form letters and just see how they respond...if they are interested or not! but there needs to be lots of experience holding and moving writing tools of various kinds

In my opinion, I think that a child should be taught writing at the age when the child is going on to nursery.

I don't know what the experts say, but the age of 5 is when most children are learning. They need to have mastered all their fine motor skills, as well as hand/eye coordination, most children have accomplished this by age 5.
