something caught my eye this morning, mice! more than 1 i'm sure. i moved a vase and the brick underneath opened quite a large hole. i don't want anyone to get bit, or sick. Is it a good idea to keep my kids and animals out of the house?

Best thing is to get some of those glue pads from the exterminator and place them around the house against the baseboards and in corners. You can't use regular mousetraps because of the kids and dogs, but glue traps are safe. Just place them out of reach of the dogs and kids.

I think that the mice got in through a previously drilled hole in the brick,or the mortar fell out allowing them to get in that way. I would simply fill the hole with steel wool and the mortar over that and place a few glue traps about the baseboards near that hole to get rid of them. Check the traps every morning to make sure the mice don't die and rot in the house

mice dont eat through bricks unless you have very strong mice....
chances of somebody getting bit by a mouse are VERY slim... we have cats and on occassion a cat catches a mouse and we "rescue" the mouse - never been bit - trust me they are more scared of you than you are of it... as far as disease goes - the only risky one is from the DEER MICE (which you may or may not have in your area) which are redish with white tummies.
Mice eat bugs and food crumbs in your home so keep a tidy house.

You can get traps - but please avoid the very cruel "sticky" trap. Ideally though a cat is the best defence - spayed females are the best hunters.

There are various traps and other remedies available at any local retailer and of course exterminators have options not readily available to us public.
Select whatever you think is best for your situation at the price you can afford.
However, to keep the mice from coming through the hole, fill it with steel wool; rodents won't gnaw on it's metal fibers.

I would recommend inspection the exterior of your home and seal up any cracks or gaps larger than a dime. Mice can squeeze thru any opening they can get their head thru. Then you can use traps or baits to get rid of the remaining critters inside the house. A professional can help you determine where they are getting in and help you seal up the holes.

So, first you should consider moving away from that nuclear waste dump site. Mice eating through brick!?! Get real, it would break their teeth off.

Get a sonic repellent, it plugs into the wall and emits a high pitched sound that mice can't stand. Humans can't hear it.
