Telemarketers have different ways of obtaining phione numbers then us everyday people. Someone you may do business with has shared your information with these telemarketers...this is the most likely scenario.

An unlisted number simply means that it is not included in the phone book or directory assistance. It does not mean that the phone number is kept confidential, so it is difficult but not impossible for someone to get the number. Due to the National Do Not Call List, a lot more telemarketing is being done using random dialling. The telemarketer may have simply gotten lucky and has now confirmed that your number is valid. They can even sell your number to others. In any case, it is highly unlikly the number of obtained through fraud.

No it is not illegal. Your telephone number is made private only if you've requested a "Non-Published" number. An unlisted number means it will not be listed in the phone book. Non-Published means it will not be listed in the phone book, nor through "Directory Assitance",so a person cannot call the Directory Assistance,to obtain your phone number. To keep Telemarketers, from calling you, download:
www.donotcall.com
Your number will be added to the "Do not call" data base list. You can enter up to 4 phone numbers, that you don't want Telemarketers to call, (and that includes your Cell Phone, because they will call that number too). This process takes only a few days, and keeps Telemarketers from calling you. (Now) It is against the law,for them to try to call you anyway, and you can file a complaint against the company(s) who trys to call.

They call all the numbers. Your number doesn't have to be listed. They have a computer that just dials all the numbers in sequence. My suggestion is to notify them that the first use of your phone for marketing or advertising is free and that for every subsequent use of your phone, there will be a $100 per use fee. Then ask for their billing address.

reverse phone number search compiles hundreds of millions of phone book records to help locate the owner's name, location, time zone, email and other public information.

Use a reverse phone lookup to:
Get the identity of an unknown caller.
Identify an area code.
Recall the name of a person whose number you wrote down.
Identify an unfamiliar phone number that shows up on your bill.

when you give your number to a company, any company, you are giving them permission to call you for the next six months. if you do not want that company to share your personal info you must "Opt-out". this means that you give them explicit instructions that they are not to share your information with any other companies. the sale and purchase of lists of telephone numbers compiled by a company in the course of it's business is legal as long as none of the names on the list have opted-out. the next time a telemarkter calls tell them that you are formally requesting to opt-out of future calls from them and all of there partners, subsidiaries, and clients and that you require that your name be completely removed from their list.

also, place yourself on the do-not-call list with the federal government. any company that you have not commenced a business relationship with will be violating the law if they call you.

Only if you have asked to be placed on the federal no-call list, and you have had no business dealings with that particular company (i.e. never bought phone service from them) in the last three years.
