There are loads of different instant messengers out there, but these are only good if you already know people online, and know their details to add to your messenger.
Message Boards are a good way to meet people that have similar interests as you. Simply search for your favourite band, or movie etc. and they will normally have a website with chat facilities. You will need to register to use most of these.
