Basically, I just need something simple, not too high tech. Something suitable for college. My budget is about under $1000.

there are many good laptop if you have $1000 to spend befor you buy make sure the laptop new with/lan ethernet network card when you do buy your laptop install a firewall /anti virus /antispyware on to it .. i recommend zonealarm internet security suite

CHeck out an Apple, You get a student discount.

Dependable and superior. Easy to use and lots of fun things come with.

thats exactly what im looking for too for college...i think i'm going to steer clear of dells, even though they give student discounts...i've heard too many bad things about them. right now, i'm looking into HP, Acer, and Toshiba

Dell. I haven't had any issues with my desktop or laptop. Well, at least not any that I haven't caused, which is probably what happened to your friends.
