I tried to do it myself but couldn't see the back of my head, even with a mirror: any one got any suggestions?

Have someone take a picture for you. Or better yet, have them crack your skull open and look around inside for any abnormalities. I'd be glad to help you out with this one...

Easy! Set up your web cam so that you can turn any which way as you look at the image on your laptop.
;-D Hope you find what ever is wrong! Head examinations are probably expensive.

Try one of those fitting rooms in any stores some have mirrors on all the sides.

use 2 mirrors, then you can see the back for sure.
