Yes I have heard of glass doors to stop a fireplace smoking. Having said that I'm going to go off at a tangent now :-) I've just renovated a cottage, whipped out old fireplace and left nice inglenook opening. Open fires like this are notoriously difficult when it comes to smoke. So many factors affect the draw of the fire, even little things like opening an internal door sharply can effect it. Anyway my point is going to be that I have plumped for a log burner having seen how good they are at a friends. Negatives for inglenook.... smoke can be, often is, a problem. logs spit n "explode". Big opening for cold air to drop down when fire isn't alight. You have to sit on top of the thing if it's really cold, seems 90% of heat goes up chimney. Positives for log burner.... No problems with smoke. Everything contained, logs can spit and explode as much as they like. Cold air doesn't drop down to any significant degree when it's not alight. Room gets MUCH warmer, as huge opening in chimey is blocked off, only stove flue passes through sealed opening. Seems 90% of heat, from hot stove stays in the room, instead of going straight up the chimney. Ok, my percentages might not be totally accurate, but you get the general idea? So that just leaves me, to apologise for going off at a tangent.. lol

If you don't have the right size opening on your fireplace, in relation to the size of your flue, then it will smoke or not draft. If you heard that you need to reduce the size, then it needs to be with something solid so air can't get through it. Glass is ok to use and is pretty easy to install. Good Luck

Yes, they are called fire place screens. You can buy them at most home improvement stores like Lowes or Home Depot.
Here are some examples, they come in either glass or medal mesh. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=123715-1639-P-3400%2000
or try this one http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?CNTTYPE=PROD_META&CNTKEY=misc%2fsearchResults.jsp&BV_SessionID=@@@@1975234908.1154094061@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdeaddihdklfffcgelceffdfgidgim.0&MID=9876
