Because all four of the tires are moving the car (also known as drive tires). On a typical car only one tire is a drive tire, unless you have a posi track or locker rear end. That is why they are better in snow or off road there are more tires moving to get traction, it's like a 4 to 1 ratio. All though a common mistake is that you can stop better on a slick surface with a four wheel drive than a two wheel drive, this has nothing to do with it; all wheels on all kinds of cars still only has 4 brakes. Meaning that the four wheel drive does nothing for stopping ability.

Assuming you are speaking about motor vehicles, it is as stated above that you have all four of the wheels on the vehicle turning to give it better traction in a variety of waivering friction conditions, such as snow, mud, a lot of water
Most other vehicles eith only have 2 wheels or 1 wheel with engine power moving the car in either the front or the back, so in that configuration you either have control of the front or back of the car, and not both ends of the auto.
Example being stuck in the ditch with a front wheel drive car in the mud , and the back wheels on the pavement, means you are not getting out.
Now the other scenario you could be referring to could be a piece of wood commonly used for landscaping and fence posts, called a 4x4, when in all actuallity it is usually 3.5" x 3.5", but through slang and measurements of old, it is still refered to as the 4x4.

It has 4 wheels and all 4 wheels drive the car, if the 4x4 had 4 wheel steering it would be called a 4x4x4.

It's called "4x4" because there are 3 different types of ways that your wheels can pull your car. Front Wheel Drive (the two front wheels propel the car) Rear Wheel Driver (the two rear wheels propel the car) and 4x4... all 4 wheels propel the car
