i'm a guy from yemen in the midle east, and lived in the US.i don't think that anybody can understand the thing going on in the middle east except middle easterns, so it's this simple,
after the holocaust, jews were collected from all over the world and then placed in Palestine, for about the last 20 years, Israel and Palestine have been fighting over the land.If an israelian guy has been captured or killed, all the isreal army is gonna go out and kill, not one, but 1000 palestanians. All countries in middle east wanna help palestine but can't because israel is backed up by the US, suddenly lebanon actually had the *** to stand up against Israel, and trying to save poor unarmed palestanians that are killed every hour, every minute, and every second.

No. It actually is an outrage and a breach of every human right and every international law I have ever heard of.

Israel, a religious state founded and ruled by fundamentalists, has problems with some radical Islamic fundamentalists. From time to time the attack Israel, although usually without any major effect.
A couple of weeks ago one of the groups clashed with an Israeli army patrol. In the ensuing skirmisch, two Israeli soldiers were killed, and a Corporal taken prisoner. Israel demanded the return of their soldier, and the Islamists demanded that some of their people held in Israeli jails should be exchanged for him. Israel refused that and istead started bombarding the sovereign state of Lebanon, which had nothing to do with the dispute. Meanwhile Israel has killed about 500 Lebanese civilians, wounded thousands and destroyed parts of housing and infrastructure.
And they are not a step closer to get their captured soldier back. In fact, Israel has already lost the political argument, as well as a good number of previous friends all around the world.

First the war isn't between Lebanon & Israel. It is between Hezbollas(aN Islamic extremist group) that resides in Lebanon. They will launch their missles from residential sites within the city and Israel will target these sites. The war goes back many years and it is over land adn religious rights. There are some ties to Germany, many Jews fled to Israel during WW2. Lebanon does not have enough troops and fire power to stop Hezbollah. The biggest problem with these Islamic groups is that their people are poor and have nothing and whenthis happens the only thing they have to look forward to in life is dying and the glorious afterlife their religion professes. This philosophy is true for most religions but they don't take it to the extreme.

The Israelis occupied the entire country of Lebanon in 1982. They just left a few years ago. Lebanon fought a civil war for over a decade. Hezbollah won seats in the Lebanese government as a political party. Hezbollah has succeeded in getting Israel to destroy Lebanon and play to the extremists who counted on civilians dying. The images of collateral damage, the entire Lebanese population, are broadcast on Al-Jazeera the Arab television network. The Israelis have isolated the moderate Arabs, if there are any in the Middle East. It is almost impossible to not support Hezbollah now.

You can't just simplify the situation or make a soundbite of the current war to make it "nice and short". It's possible to make all of the fuss into a "they did this-they did that" situation. Such a superficial treatment of the current events, however, allows us to forget the entire history underlying the current situation. To really understand the war (or at least get a better understanding for yourself), you really need to understand the history of the region. I don't know, there's plenty of information in books. Your public library is a great resource. Hey, even Wikipedia is a good start. Don't just rely on answers that do not take into account the complexity of the events at hand, nor that just make appeals to emotions. Sorry about this type of response, but the aim of your question (to over-simplify a very complicated situation) is not the way to go IMHO. Get to the source, do the work, and find out for yourself.

Cheers

History in a nutshell:

1. The Nazi Holocaust - 6 million Jews die - loads of Jews move to Palestine.

2. Jewish Zionists decide they need an independent state - start terrorist activities against the British colonial government and the UN to drive them out.

3. British give up and withdraw... Israel and Palestine created in 1948.

4. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced.

5. Arab Countries invade to destroy Israel. Israel wins and captures the rest of Palestine.

6. Multiple wars leave Israel in control of all of Palestine. Israel sets about settling in Palestine and leaves the Palestines there, and those who were expelled from Israel proper, in poverty with no rights.

7. Palestinian frustration leads to Palestinian terrorism.

8. Palestinian attacks on Israel from Lebanon lead to Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. Thousands killed. Lebanon degenerates into civil war as a consequence.

9. Israel continues to occupy the West bank and Gaza and south Lebanon. Poverty and persecution increase. Hamas is born. Lebanon destroyed by civil war. Lebanese get increasingly radicalised and Hizbollah is born.

10. Hizbollah and Hamas together fight Israel to try and get some basic human rights for people of Palestine.

11. Hizbollah and Hamas kidnap 3 Israeli soldiers.

12. Israel forgets its Zionist terrorist past, and the fact that it has virtually destroyed Palestine and Lebanon in the past, and condemns both groups as terrorists.

13. Israel decides wreak revenge not by attacking Hamas and Hizbollah but destroying the whole of Palestine and Lebanon in revenge for 3 soldiers being kidnapped and destroying as much civilian infrastructure as physically possible, and at the same time killing any civilians who happen to be in the way.

The basic cause is land. Israel occupies Palestinian land and Palestinians have virtually no rights in their homeland. The anger and frustration this has caused has led to hostilities.

All Israel needs to do is withdraw from the land it has occupied in violation of dozens of UN security council resolutions and this will all be over.

Yeah, it's not short - but it has numbered bullet points!

Hezbollah fancies itself the official Resistance of the Palestinian people. The creation of the state of Israel displaced thousands of Arabs some 50 years ago, and the struggle for stability has continued ever since.

The most recent explosion of violence was predicated by the Isreali pull out from southern lebanon last year and the subsequent increase in cross border raids by Hezbollah.

before Israel and Hezbollah went thru fight to return back the land of Golan back to Lebanon. the fight continues thru many years, and at the end Israel left the war and gave up the land, and they both sign a temporary peace treatment, however Israel has many Lebanese soldiers who has never returned back to their home. Hezbollah and Israel signed the temporary peace treatment but couldn't solve the problem of these Lebanese soldiers who have been captured by Israel. Hezbollah want his soldiers back, but Israel did not return their soldiers back to them.
so Hezbollah captured their two Israeli soldiers for the sake to bring back their Hezbollah soldiers (which many people felt it's broken the peace treatment). so Israel said no, and the fight started. Israel went and destroy whole Lebanon by Air, sea and ground. and Hezbollah only have ground fight.
