Sea Shells are made up of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3)
It is also called lime. Chalk sticks used to write on a black board are also made up of lime.
Lime is also used to white wash walls of a house.
Sea shells are nonliving and used for protection by the animals
Egg shells are also made up of calcium carbonate.
Sea shells and egg shells both are a source of commercial lime.

Sea shells are made of calcium carbonate, or CaCO3, which has two common polymorphs, calcite and aragonite. Aragonite is slightly more soluble than calcite and also is easier for the animal or plant (there are calcareous algae, as well) to secrete. Fossil shells often have "recrystallized" to calcite, although most sea shells originally are aragonite. The rock Limestone is made of calcium carbonate, in either of the two forms. Lime, however, is CaO, not the material from which shells are made, but is obtained by the process called 'Calcining'.

Most sea shells are made from calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Calcium carbonate has two different polymorphs (different ways the molecules are ordered, or different mineral names).
At the present time sea shells are made of aragonite, but in the Cretaceous period they were made of calcite (the most common mineral made of calcium carbonate).
This difference in the mineralogy of sea shells correspond to long term variations in the chemistry of sea water, specially the Mg/Ca ratio.
This is very interesting and I suggest you to take a look at:

Sea Shells are made by the organism that lives within them. As the mollusk ages, it will build onto the shell making it larger. Empty seashells are left behind from something that was eaten or died.

Sea animals create their own shells and when they molt (grow bigger shells) they leave behind their old shells.
