I remember reading on Wikipedia that a lot of people thought Willam Shakespeare was Sir Francis Bacon. See what I have pasted from there below:
Bacon and Shakespeare
There is a persistent discussion among historians, researchers, and many scholars who have and continue to engage in an ongoing debate as to whether Bacon was in fact the real Shakespeare. Since the nineteenth and twentieth centuries a number of writers extended Bacon's acknowledged body of work by claiming that Bacon was the author of the plays of William Shakespeare. There is disputed evidence for this via Bacon's Shakespeare notebook, The Promus and The Northumberland Manuscript. See: Shakespearean authorship.
I hope this helps you on your search!

There are many theories of the idea that Shakespeare never actually wrote anything. The main reason for these theories is the fact that the writing is considered too educated for someone of Shakespeares background. One theory is that it was a certain noble woman of that time. However, I think that Shakespeare actually wrote it, and that all these theories that he didn't are thought up by educated elitist who think that anyone without an official degree must be inferior to someone with one. But that's just my uneducated opinion.

It was just plain ol' William Shakespeare. A great book is "A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare: 1599, by James Shapiro.

The theory has be espoused that Marlowe wrote a lot of the works attributes to Shakespeare, but I have seen no one offer positive proof of this.

There are all kinds of candidates. Most people don't think Shakespeare had the education to write them. One candidate was a strong contender. I can't remember his name for the life of me, but his family crest was two crossed spears, hence the name. He was high up in the court, and he would have been well-educated, but since some of the plays might have been considered anti-government, he may have had to disguise who he really was.
