Does it just get used for practice, or do they dump them?

very often they are unusable as they have most of their seem worn away by the abrasion on the pitch, if they are in reasonable condition as they are match balls they are kept to exchange if a ball falls appart during its period of use (80 overs), the umpire offers a selection of used match balls and agrees a replacement ball that is of similar wear to the one that is damaged.

The ball from england first innings that was only 38 overs old may well be kept, the only real alternative to this is when a cricketer takes a hat trick (3 wickets in 3 consecutive balls) where it is presented to the wicket taker.

They are kept until the end of the game, then if a ball splits the teams can choose to continue with one of the old balls until it's time for the official "new ball"... after that its dumped...

practice balls i would think, balls that have not used up their life span are kept for future matches as replacements, donated to local clubs, i really don't know, i would doubt they are dumped.

The ball might be again repaired in the factory and used thereafter.
