I was asked by a Japanese friend if there is an international relationship between Australia and North Korea but haven't heard of it. How do you think?

If there is, what is it for?

Yes.
The relationship between australia & north korea was put in place about 20 yr ago in case all the chinese packed up & went home & australia would b left with no asian food outlets.
I think that it will b hard at first not hearing "going to the chinese takeaway to get dinner" changed to "going to the north korean takeaway to get dinner" but being aussies well get used to saying it in time.

It is highly likely that Australia has a diplomatic relationship with North Korea as this is in thier part of the World. Middle powers often retain diplomatic contact with such countries so they can talk to the leaders and try to influence thier decisions. This has worked in the past to keep and line of communication open. There may also be a trading relationship but Australia would be signatory to UN sanctions against North Korea.

Some years ago when the US would not deal with Communist China such countries as Canada kept up a rather good diplomatic and trading relationship. In many cases this was a very helpful relationship for everyone.
