Apple tries to make it hard to take music from other computers, so if you connect it to multiple computers, ipod automatically changes "ownership" of computers, and then you can't upload songs from your original computer. Whenever you want to load someone else's music, you'll have to ask them to e-mail (or whatever) their music and save them on your computer.

If iTunes doesn't detect your ipod, i would uninstall and re-install all of the software, including the ipod updater and iTunes. (Don't just "repair") Good luck!!!
