They are a big club. First,no-one gets bigger home crowds than NUFC except for Man U, and that's only because they have a bigger stadium. They get 52,000 for every home game.
They are also a wealthy club. Invariably, they are listed as one of the world's top 20 richest clubs. Four years ago, under Bobby Robson, they actually came in as the sixth richest club. This explains why they can offer 30 million for Rooney, 16 million for Owen, etc.
However the success in terms of domestic honors has been barren of late. The last major trophy they won was the UEFA Cup in 1969. But also, under Kev Keegan they did come 2nd and third in the premiership. And they were third and fourth under Bobby Robson.
This season, with the likes of Parker, Duff, Emre and Defoe (apparently) playing for them they'll be challenging for fourth place and hoping for good runs in the FA, League and UEFA Cups.
Also - and this is personal - I think they have the best football strip of all the premiership clubs. The famous black and white stripes!

Newcastle United consider themselves the biggest club in the country, REASON which other club has over 52,000 attendance at every home game and that is without winning any silverware for years, would Arsenal Chelsea or Man United get that support?

Newcastle consider themselves a big club because they have a long tradition and a fanatical following.

What they have done is all too obvious. They have appointed a number of managers for their footballing fame rather than their managerial skill. These managers have spent all the club's money on big name signings most of whom have not delivered the goods.

Newcastle will not recover until their supporters realise the club now has to "cut its cloth according to its means".

History man, history! We're an amazing club across history, think Jackie Milburn! Plus you can't deny we've been unlucky in the FA cup in recent years, we've been in the final loads without winning it. We've produced some of the finest players in England and Europe. We've had problems with managers, but generally have a decent squad of world-class players at any one time.

We're the best fans in the world. They're my beloved toon army and i'll die a Newcastle fan. Even if we never win anything, unlike sodding Man U and Chelsea gloryseeker fans.

and no matter how many people have a go at him, Shearer has been consistently the greatest striker the Premiership has ever seen for 10 years. we're probably going to get relegated without him!

It is a big club with a long history and in order to appreciate this it is a good idea to select some articles from the archives of the team and have a nice read.

We won the FA Cup 6 times whilst Sunderland only won it once. Boro haven't won it yet (if ever).

We won the Fairs Cup in 1969, the year after Man U took the European Cup.

Don't forget we've been in the Premiership non stop since 1993 and were runners up for the title one year.

You can't say that about Sunderland, can you?

I don't know - they just had Alan Shearer for a long time. He was an amazing sportsman and scorer (he always made the difference). And they have a good Keeper. But this is not enough to be a big club...

They have a huge loyal following for a team that hasn't won much silverware recently.

Newcastle away at Portsmouth must be one of the longest distances that away fans will have to travel, but they'll still fill the away end.

Newcastle are a big club because of their fans.

Won nothing in 60+ years and had a loyal fan base for as long, kind of like the MLB 'Sox' teams until 2004/2005.
