The most popular football code in New South Wales and Queensland is rubgy league, usually called 'league'. Rugby union is also played mainly in those states, and is usually referred to as 'union'.
Australian rules football is the most popular form of football in the other states, and is usually referred to as 'footy'.
Association football is usually called soccer in Australia, although those who play it often call it football.
American football is usually called 'gridiron' in Australia, and does not have a very large following.

Oooh, I think they actually mean australian rules football. It looks like a good sport - like soccer only with a bit more contact, like american football.

it's Australian Football League, it's a game only played here in Australia which consists of 16 teams, it's by far the most popular sport in Australia

Neither. They mean Aussie Rules Football, which is different. Or sometimes Rugby, but that's mostly New Zealand.
