Movie themes go in phases, often when a film of one type is a huge success, others follow with something similar hoping to "ride the wave".
Also the improvements in CG technology have made it easier to add special effects.
People always want to be spooked, and in these days where ideas that challenge established religion are not taboo and belief in ghosts, possession e.t.c are more widespread, there is a bigger market for these types of films.

People have always been drawn to the supernatural I guess that because they been told that such things as the supernatural is bad for you; and people have always been attracted to things they should be doing or watching. Also people like to be glued to their seats they want a movie that will get them thinking a good who done it movie is just the thinking to keep you on your toes and biting your nails.

They are now figuring out that adults aren't going to the movies anymore because all the movies suck...so its cheaper for them to spit out horror flick after horror flick than it is for them to actually come up with something half way descent.
