Apparently Homer Simpson is a taken from a real life character Matt Groening's father. Apparently Matt Groening is Canadian too. Not all Canadians are like Matt Groening's dad.Unless you count Doug and Bob Mackenzie the Mackenzie Brothers from the old TV show SCTV or Red Green from the Red Green show all fictional characters by the way.

"Groening named the main Simpson characters after members of his own family: his parents, Homer and Margaret (Marge or Marjorie in full), and his younger sisters, Lisa and Margaret (Maggie). As for himself, he decided it was a bit too obvious to name a character after himself and chose the name "Bart" (an anagram of brat). However, he stresses that, aside from some of the sibling rivalry, his family is nothing like the Simpsons."

Guy be the name of Dan Castellaneta.. they formed the show around Bart.. and then this guy auditioned and they made Homer like the voice.. :)
