I've been getting them done regularly since I was in high school. If this is your first time, I suggest you have the nail tech cut them short. When you aren't used to having long nails it can be a bit difficult to maneuver with them at first. It is a great look and very stylish. Just try it this one time and if you like it then have it done again if not, at least you tried it.

I hate to break this to you, but when your asking for people's opinion you have to be ready to hear the good and bad especially if your asking something about nails. I'm sure you know how many women get acrylic nails. Well if you don't there are a lot. I wore acrylic nails for a long time and personally I would cancell the appointment because they look good, but there are super bad for your real nails. Once you get them they are going to look great if you have someone that's really good, but when you hit certian things by mistake the pain is terrible. Not only that when you want to take them off your real nails are going to be very weak and very dry and brittle. They really make your nails underneath look bad. You have to go in every two weeks to get more and more acrylic put on top of all the othe layers. Also if you leave them on over a certian amount of time fungus can get underneath. I liked them because of the look, but they have a lot of negatives that go along with them. If you decide to get them you will see what i'm talking about.

I have gel overlays done on my nails - they look fantastic for about 2 weeks then by the third they need to be done again. The downside is, when they come off your nails are very thin - everytime you get them done the nail technicians file and buff the nail plate. At the moment one of my overlays has come off completely and where my real nail has become so weak I have to keep putting nail glue on it where is broken (halfway down my nail, not the free edge of it)! Its such pain and I'm beginning to think they're more trouble than they're worth. But no doubt I'll get them done again!
If, as you say, you're getting them done this once I'd definitely go for it, they do look amazing when first done.

I've been having mine done for nearly a year. Yes they do take some looking after, but then so do real nails. You will need to have "in-fills" about every 3 weeks depending on how fast your nails grow, which i pay about £15. When you have them off it can leave your real nail weaker, but this all depends on how long you keep them on.
I personally prefer them, but my natural nails are weak anyway. i think they look neater and more professional if kept "classy."
One good rule i think to follow is "if you wouldn't put it on your face, don't put it on your fake nails"
Make sure you go somewhere with a good rep also.

It depends on where you get them done, I had a bad experience turns out where I had gone they weren't using the correct tools left my hands very sore and nails have never been the same again since.
Don't let them file the face of the nail especially with a round electric file, this is the worst thing for your nails.
Personally I would recommend you get Gel nails instead alot more gentler on your nails.

Not really, the only good thing is they look nice, just had them done for wedding,
and thought they wouldnt damage my nails hence had the arcrylic ones, but its just same as all others it puts grooves in them when your nails grow. My nails are now all brittle and have got to wait for the grooves to grow out.
And they are useless you have no sense of anything becuase of the build up on nail, they discolour really easy, and you have to have them soaked off, and also have to pay for that privalage too!

They are ok if done properly and not those big, square pornstar nails favoured by chavs everywhere.
Be aware though that they do knacker your natural nails up if you're ever thinking of growing your own.

they are ok you just have to keep on top of them so that you don't get a fungus under the acrylic b/c of water that gets under there. they look very pretty and are nice to have just take care of them you will be fine afterwards you will have little ridges left on your nails but with time those will grow out.

Bianca, I've never had them myself but they are not permanent so I can't see the harm in them.
Go for it and see for yourself if you like them. If you don't, then put it down to a learning experience and just don't get them done again. - Take a few risks in life, enjoy yourself on Monday, it's a chance to do something different isn't it.

no, when you get them you have a chance of getting nail fungus, plus when it comes time to take them off there are ridges left on your real nails that take forever to grow out! plu you have to get them refilled all the time and it becomes real costly, what like $15? its just not worth it
