I believe that a lot of people do not take lesbianism seriously. It's becoming almost expected, at least here in America, that women are "bisexual". I know a lesbian couple that has been together for eight years and their families *still* expect them to get over it one day.
Just from my personal experience, but I've seen a lot of men who think they can convert a lesbian. :| I guess they think they have the all mighty wang of change. You don't see women openly admitting that they are trying to convert a gay guy....but I think a lot of women do desire it.
I guess it all just comes down to men as the dominant group.

Because the idea that women must have children is so ingrained and pervasive. Men are less necessary.
Because the idea that women need a provider and protector is also ingrained. Men are expected to take care of themselves.

In many societies, women are second-class citizens and do not necessarily have the means to support themselves. In countries where this is not the case, it is easier to come out.
