Questions of this magnitude tend to awaken deep thoughts, as well as stir emotions. So, I will tell you that being in the higher position requires you make corrections in a timely and fair manner. If you do not, you are not being fair to the suborinate or yourself.

Follow your company's outlined plan of discipline. Usually the first step is a verbal warning, then a written warning. After that you may need to issue an unpaid leave of absence (1 day, 3 days, 7 days). If none of these measures are effective then you have no other choice than to terminate employment.
But of course, each case is different. Disciplinary action may vary depending on the severity of the offense, how the action affects other employees and company morale, and company policy. Ask your supervisor or colleagues if they have a Human Resources manual. Some companies may even allow you to refer the employee directly to HR for disciplinary action.
At any rate try to maintain your composure and always remain professional. Don't bring personal feelings into discipline because it causes your subordinates to lose respect for you. But be firm and fair to maintain order and respect in the work environment. Good luck!

Always look at yourself, first. Have you properly trained the person and provided all the resources necessary for success? Have you offered encouragement and appropriate support measures? If the answer is "no" to any of those questions, then address that first. If you can honestly answer "yes" to all of those questions, then you need to thoroughly follow company policy regarding how you address and document problems. If you have done that already, then I think you might need to fire this person..... which can be a very difficult, but necessary, thing to do. Good luck.

Depends on what is going on. You might want to sit down with your subordinate and maybe let him know you find his/her behavior to be substandard, or immature. Then suggest ways of improvement. Be specific. Give Examples.

If he/she must discipline him/her self - and you don't have a clue -- aren't you the real subordinate? Take charge of your job, or you will be disciplined by your superior.
