They make sure the patients needs will be met once they are released, they arrange home health assistance if needed, ot physical therapy, or rehabilitation, possibly arrange for nursing home...help patients by connecting them to necessary social, health and mental health organizations...such as Meals-on-Wheels or adult day care. The list goes on. The social workers skills are well utilized in the medical/hospital setting

They needless drive up the costs of healthcare. But the good ones at least make you feel better about it.

Mainly they connect people to needed resources. They are trained to be understanding and caring, so they are generally nice about it.

They intervene when issues of possible abuse are involved, be it men, women or children. ie: a wife poisoning her husband, a spousal abuser, child abuser etc.
