I can't help you with South Carolina, but I just moved to North Carolina last year. I was originally in Hendersonville, which is just about 20 minutes outside of Asheville. I personally would choose Hendersonville over Asheville. It's more laid back to me. It's a growing community, but has more of a home town feel to me than Asheville. The scenery is also wonderful as it's a mountain town.
If you're set on either Columbia, SC or Asheville, NC, then I would choose Asheville. It is a really nice area. The scenery is gorgeous as it is in the mountains. It has a small 'historic' downtown area and there are some interesting people. I guess, it really depends on what you're looking for when you move. If you're looking for a new job in the corporate arena, then you'd probably be better off with Asheville than Hendersonville as they have more opportunities. Temperature is another factor. Asheville and Hendersonville are close to the same temperature's in town. If you get a home higher up in the mountains, it's a bit cooler (by 5 -10 degrees). It's nice in the summer, though this summer has been a little hot (80's - 90's). The winters are fairly mild. Last winter we got just enough snow to dust the grass and roads. It's nice because you get to see the snow without all the hassle of having to dig your way out of it.
As for a comment from someone above for Charlotte or Raleigh, they're nice cities, but nowhere near as beautiful as Asheville. I'm currently located about 20 minutes north of Charlotte and commute there to work everyday. It's a much larger city, more hustle and bustle. If you want the large city atmosphere without living in the city, I recommend the Lake Norman area, which is North of Charlotte. It's grown up a lot in the past few years, but there are some great views. There are a lot of new homes going in and you can have a great view of the lake. The temperature in the Charlotte area is hotter than the mountains of Asheville (usually by about 5 - 10 degrees). It's also very rare to get any snow during the winter.
Whatever you decide, I'd highly recommend traveling to any place before you move. Take a week or a long weekend and drive around the area. Make sure it fits your needs before you take the time and expense to relocate. Have fun!

Best place to live is solely your opinion. There may be a reference book in your local library called Places Rated Almanac. It is a good starting point. I own a copy.
Between Columbia, SC or Asheville, NC, I would choose Asheville. I have lived outside Greenville, SC. If you like heat and humidity in the summer, Columbia is a great place. Closer to the ocean.
Asheville is in the mountains. Lakes nearby. Cooler than Columbia, but you will get snow and colder temps in the winter.

I have never been to Asheville, but I have heard wonderful things about it. Beautiful location, mountains, shopping, etc. As far as Columbia, SC, I like it. It gets EXTREMELY hot in the summers and can get cool in the winters. If you are looking to raise a family in this city that would be ideal, but if you are looking for an alternative life style you may be dissappointed although Atlanta is only around 3.5 hours away. Try visiting both cities and seeing for yourself.

Charleston and all of South Carolina is Eastern Time. Jackson and all of Mississippi is Central Time, an hour behind Eastern Time. For example, if it's 5 in Charleston, it's 4 in Jackson.

I don't get how people who have never been to SC/NC can judge it. But anyways I was born and raised and South Carolina and recently I got married and my husband is from East Los Angeles and I chose to live here in SC. It's safe here, the weather is nice and so are the people. Of course there are some people here that are mean but that's just probably because they aren't from here originally. I've lived in New York, Kansas, and stayed in East LA for a month or so and honestly I don't care what anybody says South Carolina is the best place to live and raise your children. We have a clean ocean and lots of places to go and things to do. Houses aren't expensive and there is a lot of history here especially in my hometown Camden, SC.

I don't say this out of bitterness but honestly I would steer clear of the Carolinas altogether if I was you. If it has to be one of those two places I think you're much better off in North Carolina than in South (although Charleston SC is supposed to be nice)...

Both North and South Carolina are gorgeous, however I would vote for San Antonio, Texas area.....I moved here last year, and it's great, lot's of new development, cheap housing and an ever expanding job market, plus very mild winters

Having travelled around the area this year on holiday I would personally vote for Ashville. Supposedly one of the prettiest towns in USA.
