whats the format i should convert it to first...?

You need to convert the .avi file to DVD format. Go to http://www.download.com and you should find a software that will let you convert it to a DVD format. It will create two files for you...AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. VIDEO_TS is the actual movie and the AUDIO_TS is the audio of the movie.
Then you will need to use a DVD burner to burn those files into your DVD.
My instructions will let you create a DVD that is playable in regular DVD systems.

Change your DVD player instead. There are cheap DVD players which can read AVI/DIVX files, so you can put 6 AVI movies on one DVD, without any format change.

Use "WinAvi", it's a fast and very user-friendly program!!....Takes only about 20 minutes to convert avi to dvd. It converts many other file-types as well.
