They tried, the people complained, and complained and complained, the government caved, and decided to drop it and keep with the English system.
I guess the people did not want to learn something new, or use their gray matter to figure out the conversion.
Did not mean to insult our neighbour, just stating the facts.

The problem is Great Britain. The English system wasintroduced in USA buy the first british settlers and it never changed. Several years ago the ISO attempted to change the system in Great Britain with no results. So since USA follows that "British" system, if GB is not going to change, why should USA do so?

It takes time to switch systems. Most people are used to the old system and are switching proves to be difficult. There is, however, some movement in this direction. Most edcuational material now uses the metric system (at all levels of education). Also, companies that deal with highly technical information use metric almost exclusively.
Give it some time and we will switch.

It's the Pilgrim's fault.
They gave up metrics to spite the King of England.
They measured by using, "Barley Corns" (TRUE)
US doesn't like metrics, errraah, except in our money.
See we know that 100 pennies = $1.00
1,000 pennies=$10.00
It's the damned nickels, dimes, and quarters that confuse us.
Hell, I forgot the subject.
ohhh ya, metrics.
We will soon be on metrics. We don't manufacture much of anything here any longer. And no one can put stuff together any more, cause we don't have the right wrenches and screw drivers.
Hmmm, maybe barley corns are better. We understand those.

America is the laziest country in the world. Sure in the long run having everything metric is better, but right now it is easier not to change over.

The United States is a big country. Switching over to metric would be too expensive - we'd have to change all the road signs, commercial packaging, maps, measuring devices...it would cost too much.

HAHAHAHAHA GOOD QUESTION, AS AN AMERICAN I HAVE NO IDEA. But I remember in the 80's when I was in elementary school they taught us both ways and insisted that by the time we got to highschool it would be all metric. Now i am and adult and well i use a lot of metric in my field but in regular life its just not there.

America (in general) is too lazy & just not quite smart enough. It's also because we think that we are the greatest nation in the world because we try and "protect" everyone that we don't want to change.

We are the greatest nation on the earth. We have been the defenders of liberty in this world. We are the richest. We are the greatest industrial force in the world. Why should we change? Why don't the rest of the world follow us?
