Go ahead and apply. My degree is in physics and I have been working in finance for 18 years.
They don't care what your degree is in, they only care that you have one.

There are plenty of "back room" jobs in a bank that involve dealing with the flow of numbers. Of course, there are more jobs dealing with the flow of money, but you get the idea.
If you have people skills, you can become a loan officer.
If you have a friend in the banking business, buy him / her a beer, and ask about what jobs there are, and what people do in the jobs.
If you don't have a frient in the banking business, there's got to be a book in the library with a title like "So you want to work for a bank".
And if there is a bank where you live which is national in scope, they will have recruiting materials describing the jobs. Obtain the materials and see where you fit.

Not everyone goes into the same field of work that their degree was in. Apply for whatever you want and let THEM tell you what you'll be hired for.
One thing though... if this is a job just to get a job, many employers look at that aspect before hiring... ie... if they think you're just getting a job there to hold you until a better one comes along, say a physics job, then they won't hire you for fear of wasting their time and money in training you.

it should be no problem, depends if you would like to be "behind the scene" or on the front line as a teller/banker. Try investment department if you enjoy numbers. Or if you have sociable personality then you can start from the bottom a being a teller. Because for bankers they usually want someone who proved himself as a good sales person! good luck.
I know Chase is not going to take people for bankers without previous sales experience. Their goals are very aggressive and you have to sell a bunch of investment products where in other banks the benchmark is not as high.

Hi! If you are in the UK you could get a job as a teller with the Bank of Scotland (hbos) and end up acting in one of their TV commercials - like the girl at my branch in Glasgow. Good Luck
