Some obstetricians don't like for women to have more than three cesareans because of the increasing amount of scarred tissue and adhesions (or tissue that gets stuck to other tissue), making the surgery more difficult and increasing the risk of hemorrhage and other complications such as placenta accreta.
I would suggest VBAC if possible in case one intends to have more children.

I believe that it is advisable that you only have 3 but you can have more. When having a cesarean they usually cut you in the same place as you had the last. They can only do this 3 times as the muscles weaken. If you have more than 3 you are cut in a different place.

I've never heard of that before. I know someone who has had 3 and another who has had 4. Only thing is that the scar tissue that a c-section leaves behind can make it more difficult for the next c-section.

The uterus is actually a very small organ, about the size of your clenched fist. If you think about how much this organ has to stretch to accomodate a baby you can begin to see why it is advisable not to have more than three. the uterus is highly succeptable to rupture after one section, let alone multiple (which is why women are advised to wait at least 12 months after a section before attempting to concieve.) the external scarring bears very little relationship to the internal scarring. a c-section is major abdominal surgery and should never be undertaken lightly. you aren't just opening up thru the first layers of skin, you are open up muscle structures. the more often you lose muscle tone, the harder it is to get this tone back which leaves you at risk of a prolapsed uterus, bladder problems (including a prolapse) and back problems to name but a few....

I have had 3 c-sections and am pregnant with baby # 4 who will also be delivered by c-section. You can really have as many as you want. How can the doctors stop you from getting pregnant? Of course each woman needs to take into consideration her medical history and how she has healed from each one to decide if it's worth the risk.
Ethel Kennedy (mother of JFK) had 11 children, all born by c-section. And that was many years ago.

This all depends on how your body heals and develops scar tissue. I have had three c-sections and I am having another one in two weeks. My first three were bikini c's and this one has to be a vertical c. The amount of scar tissue has built up to the point that my doctor said it would be difficult to go in through the old scar. If you don't have to have a c-section, don't. Go with the VBAC.

The scar tissue and broken muscle becomes weak when stretched out to many times, it can cause complications, the suiggested maximum is 3, its not recommended for those reasons plus others that i cant remember, scary image having your skin split
