If you're after paintings, an amazing man called Chardin did frighteningly realistic still-life paintings. His best is of a rabbit.

However, it's totally opinion based. Some would say Turner, some Michaelangelo, some Picasso, some Warhol, some Klimt.
It's impossible to decide on one.

It depends what your criteria is. I'm a massive fan of Damien Hirst, but I have loads of books on Pre-Raphaelite art and Japanese ancient works. I'm not ever going to be able to choose a type of art, let alone an artist.

There is no best Artist for all. All appreciation of Art is subjective. Therefore, you may find the work of my best artist ugly, and I may find yours simplistic, and vice versa. Not even the Creation itself is beloved by all.

My favourite works are mostly Rennaissance (I don't know enough about Asian art to really appreciate it), but I like some surrealistic artists as well (Dali and Magritte, for example) in fine arts; music... there are just too many; theatre and movies... ditto. Poetry, Milton, so far. I need to get back to that and advance further. Prose... I don't know..

What kind of artist? Fine art, music? If fine art, Salivador Dali by far. I love all of his work, but the works he did in the '30's is just amazing. You can look at it for hours and find new things in his paintings. My favorite painting of his is "An aparition of a face on a beach" 1938. Its awesome you should check it out.

surely art is totally individual; to the person that is looking at it and the mood they are in. For example i I love Bensky when i feel cross with the world. Yet Georgia O'Keefe relates to my more peaceful side.
