I always liked the Ramones the best. Unless, of course, you count Blondie as a "punk" band, which really, they originally WERE!!!!

Must admit I'm a bit biased tho. I saw BOTH bands the first TWO times they both played in L.A., way back in '77, when they were promoting their first albums. Fresh from NYC, they played the Whiskey on Sunset, and I also saw the Ramones at a place called the Golden West Ballroom in Orange County. The band I was friends with opened for them, and we spent the whole day before the show hanging out for sound check, smokin' & drinkin' & stuff! They were all real nice guys - hate it that all but one of them are dead now.

I spoke with Debbie Harry at the Whiskey, the first time Blondie played there. She was real cool! The second time she played the Whiskey, Joan Jett (who was still in the Runaways at the time), joined her onstage! I was right up front, and the Whiskey is NOT a very big club!!!

Also, if Billy Idol counts as a "punk", he gets my vote, too! Years later (in '89), I had the extreme pleasure of meeting him as well. Then, in '90, I got to see him in concert. He was GREAT - both on & off-stage - a really fantastic person!!!!!

One of my biggest pet peeves is that people think punk music is still around. It's not, It died at least 20 years ago, if not more. I could even make the argument that the Sex Pistols were the ONLY true punk band, but I don't feel like writing an essay right now. The 80s DIY scene had a lot of punk elements to it.

Now, the best? Well, if I open up the possibilities outside of the Sex Pistols, I'd probably say Minor Threat.

The oldies are the best - Sex Pistols, Sham 69 and the ilk. They bring back fond memories of '77!
I dont' think that some of the bands that are called "punk" today are so - Green Day are great fun, but they're not punk. The anguish-ridden angst and anger aren't as raw as the bands that were around in the late '70's.

If you want a good introduction to a view on the rise of punk, read "Head-On", by Julian Cope, who was the frontman for the Teardrop Explodes.

Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols were awesome... they had an amazingly high capacity to piss people off, which is cool.

The Clash, to tell the truth, were better musicians. The lyrics were often more meaningful, and each one of their songs sounded violently different from the others, which is rare, especially nowadays, but awesome.

The Velvet Underground and the Ramones both got their starts in the 60s, so they can be credited with actually STARTING punk, and that alone should make them great.

I can't really choose between those groups...

Most musically talented punk band were the Clash, but you can't beat the Sex Pistols for entertainment.

Someone here thinks Linkin Park are Punks!! That's funny!

For me, the best punk band ever are Minor Threat. They started the whole hardcore punk thing and then everything exploded. Dead Kennedy's, Black Flag, Gorrilla Buiscuits, Civ, Verbal Abuse are other great examples of great punk bands.

And of course the Sex Pistols, the Clash and Sham 69 rule too!!

The Dead Kennedies are the quintissential punk band for me, but The Clash had the political ideologies, the vitriol, the intelligence, the creativity and innovative streak AND the tunes. The think with The Clash is that they transcended punk and simply became one ofe the greatest bands ever.

Well, if you really think about it, Green Day are no longer punk, but they did a great deal of service by bringing it back into the public eye. As did Blink 182, but Green Day did much more. I think that Green Day are the best punk rock band EVER because of what they did and their music really rocks. It still has the same kick as it always has done. Their new stuff is now rock and is just as good, if not better-Green Day best punk rock band ever
