In 9.5 (9 and a half hours) hours a motorist travelled 608 km.
So, divide 608 by 9.5
Don't forget to move the decimal point one place to the right for EACH number. Thus you'll divide 6080 by 95 and get 64km per hour.

Knowing that r*t = d, to find the average speed, rearrange the equation so that r = d/t. Then "plug in" your numbers. (9 am to 18:30 pm is 9.5 hours) r = 608/9.5 so r = 64 km/hr

9am to 18:30pm = 9 hours 30mins
so time = speed/distance (t = s/d)
so speed = distance/time
s = 608/9.5hours
s = 64km/h

You take the amount of Km Driven and divide them by the hours of which they were driven in.
Hector was the first to explain this,

are these hours in the same time zone, and in the same day?
I'm guessing so... if you can't spell "average"... those additional two variables would be overwhelming.
