It's a little early still to be making plans for Christmas and New Years. In a couple of months it'll be easier to find things to do for those specific holidays. There will be lots of New Years Eve events. Not sure what would be open for Christmas Day.

Probably the only sporting event you're likely to be able to find in December is hockey. I'm not a fan myself, but I know some people who love to go see the Blackhawks. Their website is www.chicagoblackhawks.com.

My favorite place to look for things to do in Chicago is the website for the free paper here: www.chireader.com. They have incredibly complete listings of concerts, theatre, movies, festivals... pretty much any kind of entertainment in the Chicago area. They also have a very good searchable database of restaurants.

I think they're still doing the German Christmas village this year. It's been across the street from Marshall Fields, so those two combined make a good afternoon. Navy Pier is fun for an afternoon. Ice skating at Millenium Park is a great winter activity. Second City is a really great evening out. Sears Tower is a big ol' waste of time. The Art Institute is by far my favorite museum-- I could spend more than one day in there. Chinatown is not far from the loop (though the neighborhood is a bit dodgy) and that's a great way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Really there's so much to do and so many choices... it depends on what you're into. Try the Chicago Reader as you get closer to your trip.

This is a big city. There's stuff going on all year round. Depending on what two weeks you're here, you can check out the German holiday market at the Daley Center Plaza; it's a bunch of shops set up to look like a german market and they sell trinkets, holiday ornament stuff, food, hot cider, beer, etc. There's a Mickey Mouse type parade thing that goes down Michigan ave. close to Christmas time.

As for New Year's eve, there are about 50 bazillion bars that have live bands and stuff. Take your pick. If you've got a fat wallet, you can try the party at the ball room of Navy Pier, the House of Blues, or any of the swanky clubs around town. There's fireworks in Evanston, which is a suburb that is on the north side of Chicago (its where Northwestern University is). They have fireworks there on New Year's eve.

As far a what to see, everybody else will tell you that...

Winterwonderland is at Navy Pier...it's like $9 (everything costs in Chicago....we don't know the meaning of "free"). You must shop at Watertower Place and drive or walk up and down Michigan Avenue (the Magnificent Mile) and just window shop. Niketown is fun. Once you get downtown, you will NOT be bored. There is sooooo much to do! Pretty and cold and possibly the windiest (i.e. coldest) place on earth so bring lots of layers, hats, earmuffs, gloves, mittens, socks, et cetera and wear it all.

You should visit and discuss with a Nobel prize Laurette in Economics. He is there. Don't miss your great moment that never come back in your life time.
