In 1877 England adopted a scheme of giving each player a cap number. So when each player receives their first cap they are assigned a number, that started with 1, a T Armitage. Some interesting names and numbers: 13 Lord Harris; 18 Reverend Royle; the legendary Dr W.G. Grace was 24; 25 the honourable A. Lyttleton; 96 The 7th Lord Hawk; 230 Lieutenant-Colonel RT Stanyforth and another legend Fred Trueman at 369. More recent big names include 422 Geoffrey Boycott; 477 Mike Gatting; 474 Ian Botham; 494 Allan Lamb; 538 Michael Atherton; 542 Nasser Hussain; 543 Alec Stewart; 568 Darren Gough; 591 Andrew Flintoff; 600 Michael Vaughan, the current captain; acting captain Andrew Strauss is 624 and the most recently capped player, Jon Lewis is 634.

The wearing of cap numbers on the shirt under the team crest was adopted by Australia in about 2001, and is gradually being adopted by other nations. I have seen Australia, India, England, and Sri Lanka all do it, but not sure about others, no doubt they will follow as it is a huge honour to play test cricket for your country.
Interestingly, although Australia and England both played in the first ever test match, there is a huge disparity in the number of representatives, Australia's most recent test cap, Dan Cullen received Baggy Green, number 397 at Chittagong (CDS) on the 16th of April, 2006. England's most recent debutant, Jon Lewis, received his Three Lions number 634 on the 2nd of June, 2006 in Nottingham vs Sri Lanka. England have used nearly 240 more players in the nearly 140 years of test match cricket. Australia's tally has two controversies: The first being that the first official tour of the UK by an Australian team, was made entirely by Indigenous cricketers, who were not granted full test recognition, and the second, Brendon Julian and Michael Slater swapped numbers after Slater had the wrong number tattooed upon his chest.
Numbers by country:
England: 634
Australia: 397
South Africa: 299
West Indies: 265
India: 256
New Zealand: 233
Pakistan: 186
Sri Lanka: 104
Zimbabwe: 74
Bangladesh: 45
The practice has also been adopted for ODI numbers, but as they wear playing numbers on the shirt, the cap number is actually now embroidered upon the side of the cap.
ODI cap numbers by nation:
England: 196
India: 165
Australia: 160
Pakistan: 154
New Zealand: 144
West Indies: 131
Sri Lanka: 130
Zimbabwe: 94
South Africa: 83
Bangladesh: 79
Canada: 37
Holland: 32
Kenya: 32
United Arab Emirates: 29
Scotland: 21
Namibia: 15
East & Central Africa: 14
USA: 13
Ireland: 11

This is the order in which they joined plsying 4 England. All nations have them but hteir numbers aren't as high. Take Mahmood. His number is 633 which means he is the 633rd player to play 4 England.

Quite true from Perkins >>>> It is the order in which they have represented England in test matches or 1 day matches - The answers above are nearly right, but more than one player can have the same number if they made their debut in the same match. Cricket is a cool game dudes.

It's the order they where called up to play for England. So for example a player who played for England in the 1920's would have a low number on his top but a player playing in the 1990's would have a much higher number as more players have been called up to play. If a player has the number 546 on his top he would have been the 546th man to be called up to play.
