Guess I know some forty different Greek Islands and everyone is different. You need to be more clear about 'classy'. Paxos is beautiful - next down from Corfu. But no real night life if you want that. Lipsi in the dodecanese is remote, harsh and very Greek if that is what you want. Patmos is striking, has good shops and decent beaches. Rhodes is tacky, boozy and ideal if you want to eat 'Fat Freddy's English Breakfast' and follow the Brit soaps. Is this what you mean by 'classy'? read 'Rough Guide' or 'Lonely Planet'.

If by classy you mean not "partying" then Mykonos is not that great of a suggestion...Mykonos, Paros and Ios are known as the "party" islands...this is not to say that they arte not gorgeous, but it's to say that if you're not into mega crowds and partying then don't go there...

Santorini has a party scene but it is also a romantic island...but very "stereotypical"...I'm Greek and I've been to Greece many times, and so have many of my Greek friends...we're not as crazy about this island as most people are...very pretty, but there's alot more to Greece then this...so people who made suggestions of the lesser known islands are right...

I would add some of the Ionian islands...

My favorite is Zakynthos also known as Zante...It has something for everyone...older people, families, couples, party goers...It has a Venetian influence as it was occupied by the Italians...The sea is beautiful...it has that light green texture to it...and there is a beach that is named after a shipwreck (Navagio, look this up you'll see the pictures)...it is really beautiful and original...there is also Zante City which has alot of little taverns and places to shop...the architecture is gorgeous...Lagana beach is nice too as are the limestone caves...

Another nice place is Lefkada just north of Zante...The beaches are known and have been rated as some of the best in Europe...Egemnoi and Porto Katsiki are really nice...Katsiki means baby lamb so try it there!

Someone mentionned Elafonisos...my friend is from there and is actually right there now...it is an island that is just becoming popular now...it's very beautiful and relaxed...and close to the mainland...you can get there from Pirea...

The classiest among the Greek islands is Mykonos, though Santorini (Θηρα, Thira) too has a good reputation. Mykonos is home to the wealthiest Greeks, and therefore can offer excellent shops and restaurants. Due to the islands unique architecture, relative seclusion and hospitality it became a haven for the rich and famous, soon after the second World War. You'll find lots of interesting info here: http://www.mykonos-web.com/

*edited for cpinatsi.. 'Thera' is anglicised, not the romanised spelling. Lesvos is a more widely recognised spelling for the other island, 'Lesbos' is too often connotated to lesbians and the tourist office on the island wants to steer away from this image. It's not that classy, my family lives there. :D

I've been to 4 islands-Mykonos, Santorini, Paros and Ios.

Santorini-By far the best island for scenery and a sense of history. Nice beaches there and plenty to see. The town of Ia will provide the best sunset you've ever seen.

Mykonos-This is more for the party crowd. Paradise Beach is a great "clothing optional" beach that has a party that starts at 5:30pm and goes till you pass out. Or that's what happened when I was there.

Ios-Its a more of a condensed party. Everybody hangs out at the beach during the day and goes into town at night.

Paros-A bit more quiet but still very cool.

Overall-your best bet is to go to Santorini and Mykonos.

1. Lesbios is the person who comes from the island Lesbos
2. Santorini is Thera and not Thyra(=door) and it is only classy in Oia.
3. Malta is not an italian island, it is a state of its own.
4. The classiest island in Greece is Mykonos, also perhaps Corfu. Careful, though, by miD August they are very crowded

Mykonos-Santorini-Syros in Cyclades
Corfu in Eptanisa
Rhodes in Dodekanisa
Crete
But if you want my opinion,I believe it's a pity visiting Greece ang going only to these islands(that everyone knows and all go there)
Greece has a lot of islands which are better than those above.Of course those islands are not so classy but they're great:
Elafonisos(close to Pelopponese)
Serifos-Sifnos-Kimolos-Folegandros-Sikinos and Koufonisia(close to Naxos) in Cyclades
Samothraki in North Aegean
Skiathos-Alonissos in Sporades
Kefallonia-Ithaki-Kithira in Eptanisa
and thousands more...like heaven

Skiathos is beautiful. There are some very classy modern hotels around the Kanapitsa area. Not too commercialised (no theme/water parks). Lots of lovely local tavernas and very friendly local people. If I could afford a holiday home it would be there! We went with our two children and had quite a cheap holiday as most of it was spent on the beach.

I think (like most others) Mykonos is the place. There many nice (and expensive) hotels, restaurants, night clubs there even "classy" beach bars !!! Also many "famous" people go there.
Santorini also is a classy place to be but it I think only if u go at Oia ...
My third recommantation is Sifnos which (for me) is the most classy islands but it's not developed yet ... and still there are foreigners tourists...

!!! HAVE A NICE STAY !!!

Rodos, Santorini or Crete. Or probably Lesbios.

In Rodos, there was once upon a time a giant, called Giant of Rodos, but it's not there any more (been destroyed by time). Have you seen the movie?

Concerning Lesbios you have probably heard the story of that iland that gave the name of it to women that like women.

So, these ilands have history and are interesting mediterranian turistic zones.
