that is a problem for this hypothesis: if you behead it, it starves, then it will die. (i dont know if its good enough for my scientific research in school)

drown the cockroach in a bucket full of water
insects do not have lungs as we do but tiny openings called spiracles at their sides which lead into their trachea and are responsible for their breathing.
once these get blocked, the pest will eventually die

and yes , it is a good problem for a school research. very creative indeed!

I suspect you will not be allowed to do this kind of research in school. There are regulations governing the appropriate (and humane) use of animals in research - that can include invertebrates like the cockroach. You will likely have trouble meeting those standards in trying to find a way to kill something.

It has always been my experience (I am a biologist) that a live animal is far more interesting biologically than a dead one. Can I suggest that you develop a research question around the natural behavior of the cockroach - or whatever organism you decide to work on. It will produce more interesting results, and, I suspect, lead to higher grades.

Use borate. This is a naturally-occurring mineral and so is not a poison in the insecticide sense, although the end results are the same. With borate you do not see them suddenly die; they go back to the nest and share it, then over time the borate interferes with enzymes in their gut and they die.

You can behead it but i think it takes several days before it dies. The best way to kill a cockroach is to drown it.

Use a empty jelly bottle, don't clean the bottle just put in the area you have the problem and leave it there. About two weeks later check the bottle and see what you cought. Oh save the cover so, just put on the cover and throw it away.

Hold the cocroach under your thumb under water.....it will die in around a minute. For scientific study that is the easiest and most convenient way to kill.

To clarify, cockroaches do have brains, which they require to live, and to do the other things your other answerers were afraid they might do headless.

So don't do your experiment. If you are curious about their biology, you'll find lots of information on the internet.

Sadly if you behead it it will lay eggs before it starves to death - so you get more cockroaches

Kill it by pressing it to death.
Anything that kills an insect is an insecticide - inherent in the name.
