do you hear a beep when your PC starts?
if its an LCD monitor unplug the power, leave it off for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and try it again, if the problem continues turn on the monitory then give it 10 seconds if that does not happen then you have a bad LCD
CRT - big fat monitor and is not a flat panel, do the same with the CRT unplug it then plug it back in and turn it on, if it does not come on then your bulb is burnt out and you need a new CRT
to test if your monitors are bad there will be a few buttons on the bottom of them, find the menu button and press it, if that doesn't come up while the monitor is on then its a bad monitor
if in the case you are not hearing a beep from your PC then that means your mother board has gone bad, or you have installed something in it to cause it not to boot correctly

The first thing to check is that all the cords and cables are corrected properly and everything is getting power. Then verify that the computer is working (you should hear fans running, and drives spinning up during the boot up process)
If you are sure the computer is working, checking the monitor on another computer is a good place to start or trying another monitor on your computer.
The video card is on of the first items accessed during the "boot up" on a computer. If the monitor is "warmed up" it should show something during initial boot up of the computer, usually some text about the computer BIOS or a logo from the computer manufacturer. If the screen shows this information, but then goes blank after the operating system starts, it can be related to the resolution or refresh rate that the computer is set to. If the refresh rate or resolution is set too high for your monitor, it is going to go blank, sometimes the light at the front of the monitor will change color, like the monitor is going into sleep mode.
On a windows machine, you can boot into safe mode, which will start the computer at a low resolution and low refresh rate and allow you to change the settings to get the computer working.

First check the plug in the back of your puter to see that it is fully in. Unplug it and plug it back in to reseat the contacts.
If that doesn't fix it, can you take your monitor to a friends computer to try it. This will determine if the monitor is bad or if you have a problem with your puter.
Take it from there.
