You need to find out if they are protected where you are first. I know here in Wales, you aren't allowed to disturb them.

I would contact your local wildlife authority. They will be able to tell you if you're allowed to move them, and what's the best way to do it. I believe, once you've moved them away, that if you put an owl decoy in the rafters it will keep them away, but I don't know how to get them to leave in the first place.

Moth balls. WORK every time. BUT they have to be spread throughout the area that the bats are living in. The bats basically get poisoned and as such keep an eye out for them. They will fall to the ground and with them being sick you don't want to have one of your cats or dog bitten or worse yourself. You may also want to watch where they are exiting the garage. Once you have that location then tack a nylon leg to the exit. This WILL ALLOW them to exit, BUT they will not be able to re-enter as the exit will now be block by the nylon legging you have tacked up. Both of these work. But with the nylon keep in mind they will be looking for a new home. and that could be your home.

At a supercenter like Lowes or Home Depot you can buy this product called Bat -a-way. These are plugged in to the wall socket and emit a noise that aggravates the bats and they leave. Humans cant hear it so you can leave it plugged in.
