I took GRE last Fall. It's not General Record Examination. It's Graduate Record Examination. It's considered to be one of the toughest tests in the world. It consists of three parts,Verbal,Quantitative and Analytical Writing(split into two essays viz perspective of an issue and Analyse an arguement).Verbal section consists of 30 questions and time is 30 mins,Total score for verbal section is 800.Quantitative section consists of 28 questions and time limit is 45 mins.Total score is 800 again. The total of two sections 1600 is total GRE mark. The Writing section is scored in a scale of 0 to 6.Time limit for one essay Analyse an Arguement is 45 mins and another essay has 30 mins.I've scored 1490 on the GRE,800 on the quantitative and 690 in quantitative and 5 for my writing. As you can see from my score that Verbal section is complicated. The Verbal section is the toughest,on the real exam you will encounter words you have never heard before.Quantitative is a piece of cake if you are a math student and all questions are objective type, you have to choose the best out of 4 choices.Hope this helps and All the best.

GRE (Graduate Record Exam) tests are made by Educational Testing Services of Princeton, New Jersey, the same folks who bring you the SATs. The purpose of the GRE test is to find out if you have mastered college-level work in a particular subject and are academically prepared for graduate school. I have taken the GRE in both English Literature and World History. They are not easy (taking the test assumes you have finished a 4-year college course in the subject), but they are not super difficult if you prepare - study hard using the guide books for a couple of months before. There is no "pass" or "fail", just a score like the SAT. Better schools want higher scores.

What is GRE all about?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test conducted by Educational Testing Service, ETS, US. The scores of these tests are used as one of the most important parameters by US Universities, colleges while selecting students to their graduate program of study.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) consists of two separate tests: the General Test and the Subject Test in psychology. The General Test measures analytical writing, verbal, and quantitative skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and are common to all fields of study.

How is the GRE scored?

Each of the three sections is scored on a scale of 200 to 800. The average scores for the GRE are about 470 for Verbal and 570 for Quantitative.

FEW SUGGESTIONS

Take the General Test in November. This will ensure that your scores will be available to meet any admissions deadline. Also, if you do poorly on your first try, you should have enough time to re-take the test in December to try to improve your scores.
You must register for Subject Test approximately six weeks before it is given

if you are not planning to attend graduate school immediately upon graduation, you should still take the GRE sometime during your senior year. Scores are good for five years, and you will never be as prepared for it as you are now.

To ensure that you score as high as you can, it is essential to prepare for the GRE. Buy one of the review books and develop a systematic plan that will enable you to brush up on your skills in vocabulary, reading comprehension, analogies, algebra, and geometry.

Consists of 3 parts
Mathematical, Analytical and Verbal. Hardness is a subjective opinion. Depends on each person. Get GRE guides.

I can see no cons. Pros - all US universities require you to take a GRE for a graduate program.

The key is to practice. Get test exams, lock yourself up in a room, take the test in the alloted time and score yourself.

My boyfriend took it & passed it... He's smart, but not a genius or anything. If he can do it, I would have confidence that anyone who makes good grades & reviews a GRE prep book before taking the exam should be in the clear.
