I'm talking about the inset ones and it would go in a large room and only be used as additional heating. I was told might cause damp

You mean like portable ones? Yeah, they are completely safe. Our landlord gave us a portable gas fire when our gas fireplace was acting up. Other than taking up loads of space which we didn't have, it wasn't any different from the regular fireplace. It didn't smell or anything (which I kinda thought it might) and it was the same safety wise as the regular fire.

This type of fire use a catalytic converter, similar to those used in cars, to 'clean up' the products of combustion. These are estimated to have a lifespan of 10 years average usage, unfortunately it is unclear what is average usage. These fires are only for use as supplementary heating and should all have a permanent air vent to outside with at least 100cm2 free area. They are also sensitive to the room volume, most requiring a minimum of 30m3 with some of the larger outputs requiring a room of at least 40m3. To keep them safe it is essential that they are serviced every year, most effective time is just before the winter period so you have peace of mind when it's used most. A CORGI registered engineer with the HTR1 qualification must be used, and a carbon monoxide detector should be used. If he doesn't have a co detector, he can't service it properly. As an extra safeguard, purchase a carbon monoxide detector, the battery operated ones are best, to fit in the same room. Follow these steps and you should be fine.
As for condensation, the products of combustion (fumes) created when natural gas is burned are 80% water vapour. Use this fire in a cold room as the only source of heating and this will create shedloads of condensation and all associated problems in the room.

There as safe as a Gas Cookstove- but I would not use it around the clock. there is always some carbon monoxide, even with the Cookstove.

they burn very clean but are not good for small confined rooms such as a bathroom. therefore are safe in a larger area and work great
