Flatulence is largely caused by bacterial decomposition of digested food to methane, hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide (other ingredients depend on the food eaten), which are all gaseous substances. When pressure from these gases builds within the colon, it must be released somehow, and an odoriferous cloud expels from the nether regions. Since an explosion is defined as a rapid expansion, flatus could indeed qualify as an explosion, especially if it is particularly large in quantity. Some do not explode out, they merely poof out almost quietly (the dreaded "silent but deadly"), but sometimes a loud honk can issue forth, proclaiming the onslaught of a vaporous explosion.

explosion is defined as a violent bursting as a result of internal pressure.

a fart is basically a violent release of air that has built up in your booty lol.

fart isn't a fart unless it's violently bursted from your bowels lol.

so technically, yes! a fart is a small explosion between the legs LOL.

It's just a puff of gas. It's not really an explosion, you don't have to get melodramatic about it. If it was really an explosion you'd know it. What do you think a burp is anyway? Is that an explosion too? Hey you're just exaggerating. If you think it's an explosion let's see you blow something up.

good question. let me involve an example from engineering physics to explain this. our stomach (pulse detonation engine) is an unsteady propulsive device in which the combustion chamber is periodically filled with a reactive gas mixture (methane, sulphur dioxide etc.), a detonation(spark) is initiated by small energy units by digestion process, the detonation propagates through the chamber, and the product gases are exhausted(farted). The high pressures and resultant momentum flux out of the chamber generate thrust. Quasi-steady thrust levels can be achieved by repeating this cycle at relatively high frequency and/or using more than one combustion chamber operating out of phase. but since human beings have only one stomach(chamber) we cannot fart continuously. all biological processes are slow ones.

Yeah that's funny. That was the definition in my school dictionary. Or small explosion from upper region.

My farts are not "small" explosions, I'll have you know. They are large, and very catastrophic.

I mean, catastrophic like the tsunami in southeast asia.

I talking Hurricane Katrina.

I talking serious doomsday black death loss of life.

No small explosions here.
