Mortangle,
That is a really good question, and I had to think about it for a while. The answer is different for everyone, so here is why I do it. I have been driven since I was a child, to gather information and knowledge. I finished reading my children's encyclopedia a few weeks after I got it. I flunked dictionary class in 5th grade, because I spent the entire school year, reading the dictionary, to learn as many words as I could, and not filling in the blanks in the workbook. I have studied philosophy and religion since I was a teen. I have come to realize that I know nothing. Knowledge is of absolutely no use, unless you put it to work. We live in a world, where there are many unsolved problems, and unanswered questions. For the first time in the history of this planet, we have an opportunity to network each other's minds, through the internet. This forum, Yahoo Answers, may be changing the world as we speak. I know there is a lot of dross here, but If you skim through it, sometimes there is precious thought at the bottom of it. I answer the questions that "speak" to me. I have been contacted by numerous people, who have thanked me for the opinions and information I have shared with them. At first, it was kind of an ego trip, but then, after looking at some of the other answers out there, I realized that I am only one cell in a much larger brain. I enjoy my little part in it, and for the first time in a long time, I am putting some of what I have learned to some useful purpose. Also, I am learning more about myself, through the expression of my thoughts. I am constantly surprised at the things I didn't know were in me, or had forgotten about. Money, means little to me. If I had all of it, but no opportunity to express myself to others, I doubt that I would enjoy it.

Sometimes people get bored for one reason or another. Something may catch their eye online or they may run into accidentially. I ran into this site and saw some questions kids wrote. I thought "If it were my child online asking such a question I would hope some sensible adult would give a sensible, wise answer." So, as I've offered some answers without any thought of money (people do things for reasons other than money, you know) I've figured its a way to maybe do something kind of nice for someone rather than wasting my "down time" on something like a game or browing catalogs....

I answer questions all day long for a living. (I'm a teacher) I guess I can't stop just because the clock has stopped ticking. Seriously, most of theses questions are just silly, but occasionally, people truly need help and if I can offer advice or my point of view, I'd like to think I've done some good today.

Probably some gratification for self. A safe way to communicate annonymously. An opportunity to learn from other people. That's my outlook on it. Money isn't the only reason people do things.

Simple: to help other people solve their dilemma or problem. For example, you obviously didn't know the answer to this question. Soooo to help you out, I answered it. Life isn't always about obtaining more money or points. Sometimes its just to show love, kindness, and respect to others who need advice, direction, or answers.

Same reason why people PAY huge monthly fees to play MMORPGs (like Everquest ["Evercrack"] and World of Warcraft):
built in system of reward
"interesting" community of people (using the term very loosely)
and it's a good cure for general boredom.

for me is a hobby, and When I found something interesting I search for the answer, I learn and help others. Some questions are very interesting, and some I already know the answers

Because I find other peoples thoughts and ideas interesting. There questions are sometimes pretty good and a little bit of a challenge. I guess its a kind of fun to test yourself too.

As the old saying goes..."The love of money is the root of all evil." Do you see something wrong with wanting to comfort others? Or at least attempt to!

That is because by posing a question for us to answer, he does not lose any money.
