yard is unit of distance and square yard is a unit of area. therefor you can not convert.

"Yard" is a measure of length. "Square yard" is a measure of area. In order to get area you need to know the shape of the area, and the dimensions of the shape.
For instance if the area is a square, the dimension of one of the sides, or the diagonal would suffice to work out the area.
In case of a circular area, the diameter or the circumference would give the area.
But a single length is not useful, by itself, in finding the area.

take the square root of 500 and you have it, i dont have acalculator here that can do that.
its near 22.35 square yards

You can't do that. 500yds is a linear measurement, sqyds is a planar measurement. (If it helps, think of converting miles to acres.)
