Yes its true. I can not recall his name but the incident took place during the 1994 world cup when he mistakenly put the ball in his own goal and when the team went back to colombia after being eliminated in the first round he was shot dead in a restaurant when a person approached him with a gun and said " Thank you for your goal" and shot him dead.

yes it`s true! columbian player.escobar was his name i remember because we where in the same group(romania),but he wasn`t the only one,it`s a common thing in columbia because of the illegal bets
