I think the main problem is Radio Stations,

They have to play a certain amount of crap ( ie Boy Band's ) and therefore there popularity grows from there. As the average show on Commercial radio is three hours long you stand a chance of hearing that song at least 4 times in that day, as they are normally on the playlist for 4 - 6 weeks people just get used to them and therefore they reach popularity. They are also targetting a certain key market of teens and housewives.

For Normal bands that write and play there own music, they need to depend on hardcore fan bases and smaller radio stations to get there music out to the mainstream. You will also see them playing a lot more gigs in better venues, In London for instance there are about 20 - 30 venues that are regulars for up and coming bands. When a band can sell out 3 nights at the Brixton Academy then that is recognition that you are respected.

Also dont forget that all of the Boy/Girl Bands have there own publicity people that flog them to death, hence you will normally see pictures of these people falling out of Nightclubs at 3 in the morning, splattered across the tabloids.

Respect - Certain bands have started in pubs and clubs and worked there way up from there, They write there own music and hunt arund for record deal, There biggest PR is "word of Mouth " and radio stations that dont play the same crap day in day out.

In short - work for it and get respect. Manufactured well you can F**k off as far as i am concerned.

Make a song that the majority of people like and want to listen to over and over again. And you're wrong about boy bands not getting any respect. Millions of pre-teenage girls all over the world respect boy bands. That may not be who you want, but respect is respect, no matter where it comes from.

Respect tends to come from hard work. If you're a musician and you've worked hard at it and people can see you're improving day on day and your live performances, songwriting and musicianship just keep getting better, the level of respect increases.

My band is getting there with this, people are starting to see we're not just another group of people, we're talented musicians with something new to offer to the world of music. People hear our album or hear us play live and they want more. That has come after a lot of hard work, practice and dedication to our art.

Respect is born out of people's recognition that you're not a jumped up wannabee and you're actually capable of doing something other people can't do.

I don't really think that playing/writing is ALL that is involved. You have to do more than that. It has to be a created, original, marketable asset. Bands are a dime a dozen now and day, (I know, I'm in one) so there has to be something that sets you apart from the rest. I am still searching.
