Strangely i am going to sit on the fence for this one.
As a london boy, the problem you have is that not much has come out of London Recently.
Some Great London Bands.
The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, The Clash, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, The Jam, Cream, Pink Floyd, The Beat, Libertines, Razorlight, The Specials, Ian Drury and the Blockheads, Babyshambles, Dirty Pretty Things, Blur, Echobelly, Sleeper, Bloc Party. Prodigy
However, Being a product of the Britpop 90's I have the Majority of the back catalouges. of the Stone roses, Inspiral carpets, New Order, The Smiths, The Charlatans, Shed Seven etc etc.
Lets just say what a brilliant country ( England ) is for producing music.

As a scouser, I find this hard to admit, but I'd have to go with Manchester. They have prosuced some of the best bands of all time like Joy Division, Stone Roses, The Smiths, New Order, etc (Take That and Simply Red are crap: that can't be argued).
Liverpool has produced some great bands but really, the only one everyone ever talks about is the Beatles. This may suprise a lot of people, but I personnaly think a lot of Beatles records are over-rated. I don't think everything they ever did is brilliant like some people seem to. Sorry fellow scousers everywhere, but I'd rather listen to The Smiths than the Beatles.

When you're right, you're right. Speaking as an Amsterdamer I have to agree: Manchester.
