Take your turtle to an exotic vet specialist. One possible cause is a bacterial infection.

If not treated, it can cause death.

A description of the condition might be helpful here. 'Edema' basically means swelling, often in the lower legs.

Where is the swelling?
- Soft tissue in shell swelling out? Obesity is the most likely cause here- it is REALLY easy to overfeed a turtle. For one thing, they don't self-regulate how much they eat. For another, they generally don't get as much exercise in captivity as they would in the wild.

- Behind the eye? This is a classic 'ear infection' and can be due to lack of key vitamins (often signalling general dietary issues), dirty water (in aquatic turtles) or other hygenic issues. It might also be a bot fly infestation. Some of these issues can be home-treated (byb improving care), but need a vet if they continue.

- Limbs? Swollen limbs are not common in turtles, especially box and should be seen by a vet.
