to get the ½ character you use the ascii code 171 using the Alt key and 171 on the number keypad. (tricky on a laptop keyboard).
How do I find a list of ascii codes and what I would really like is the lower case 2 for writing O2 properly.
Do you memorize ascii code to get extra characters - especially useful for frogien language users

try playing with subscript and superscript in word, that will probably give you the O2 type thing you are looking for. You will find that under format. just higfhlight the text you want to change and then click format - font

and for a really easy option, use the charactor map built into windows, programs - accessories - system tools - character map.

Use the charactor map built into windows...
Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System tools - Character Map.

Go through the fonts, some of them will have the subscript and superscript of the symbol you want.

Try, Start>Programs>accessories>System tools>charecter map.

What you are saying is called subscript and can be accessed in the customise toolbar function in ms word

See the link below.

Jot down the few that you're most likely to use. Use a photo editing software to type it onto your desktop image, so that everytime you need to refer to it, it's right there on your desktop. Overtime you'll remember them off by heart.
