Some of the moons in the solar system do look as if they've split apart and joined back together. But I've never seen any discussion that this might have happened to "our" Moon.
Current scientific opinion is that either the Moon, like the Earth, formed from the dirt/dust around the Sun -- or, the Earth was struck by a large object *billions of years ago*, creating the moon.
Neither happened only 1400 years ago (600 CE), which would have been very spectacular and been recorded by every civilization on the Earth ... which it wasn't. Maybe the Koran was telling a "teaching story," not recording an actual event.

I'm not sure if you know this or not, but Quraan is the only holy book that has been known to evolve over a period of time, with the evolution of the religion. Every version of it, since the first, has been different than the previous one.
With all due respect, I wouldn't be surprised if we ever find out that the joining of moon chapter, as you say, was nothing more than some lunatic's imagination added to the holy book, much later after the original version.
Secondly, I think this question has more to do with religion, so I'd say its listed in the wrong category perhaps. Out here, you will probably get only rational explanations to such a myth.
But again, its very much possible that it did happen in some pre-historic time (can't be 14 centuries for sure), but being rationale myself, I wouldn't believe in any of it without evidence. And for no given cause would I ever think of it as a miracle, not more than the creation of universe itself could be. I'm sure science can explain it better, if needed!!!

In D. H. Lawrence's book "Women in Love" there is a chapter called "Mooney", in which the moon shatters into thousands of pieces and falls or swims back together again. The fantastic description is actually of the reflection of the moon in a mill pond disturbed by a large stone. The story is very meaningful, but its meaning is not about the moon.
The point of this is not to reduce the Q'ran to the level of a novel, but rather to say that its story about the moon is probably very meaningful too. It just might not be about the moon, which never actually split in two.

Looks like the guy who wrote the Quran looked at the full moon, few days later at half moon, and a few weeks later at the full moon again...! The rest of the time he was too busy making up other stories Muslims still live by today...

The thing is that there is no glaring evidence - like a fault line around our moon to prove this, yet Miranda, one of Uranus moons has siginificant cracks on the surface that suggest that this moon has split and come together. Do a google image search for "moon miranda".
Also in space, things are very messy leaving considerable evidence of past activity - look at our moon's surface, it has crater upon crater upon crater - proving that small and large asteriods hit the surface constantly - but something like splitting of the moon? - with not a fault line to be seen? - and we are still debating it? - come on!!!

I am sure that is is not mentioned in the Quran. If so - it will give me another reason not to be a Muslim.
